The director and stars of 1998's
You've Got Mail scoreda breakthrough hit with this hugely popular romantic comedy from 1993, about a recently engaged woman (Meg Ryan) who hears the sad story of a grieving widower (Tom Hanks) on the radio and believes that they're destined to be together. She's single in New York, he lives in Seattle with a young son, but the cross-country attraction proves irresistible, and pretty soon Meg's on a westbound flight. What happens from there is ... well, you must have been living in a cave to have let this sweet-hearted comedy slip below your pop-cultural radar. There's little complexity or depth to writer-director Nora Ephron's cheesy tale of a romantic fait accompli, and more than a little contrivance to the subplots that threaten to keep Hanks and Ryan from actually meeting. But the purity of star chemistry here is hard to deny, and this may be the first film to indicate the more serious and sympathetic side of Hanks that is revealed in later roles. With its clever jokes about "chick movies" and repeated homage to the classic weeper
An Affair to Remember, this may not be everybody's brand of amorous entertainment, but it's got an old-Hollywood charm that appeals to many a movie fan.

| Easily the worst movie of all time right next to Fist of the North Star. This movie is good for one thing and one thing alone. Getting your girlfriend to shutup long enough to get a couple of beers down and maybe catch half a football game. |

| When Sam Baldwin's wife dies, he decides to move to Seattle with his son, Jonah. When Jonah sees how sad his father is, he calls a radio psychiatrist, who dubs him Sleepless in Seattle cause Jonah says he can't sleep. He starts to talk about his wife and women over the country hear his tale and one woman Annie who lives in Baltimore can't help but fascinated by his tale. Annie despite being engaged can't stop thinking of Sam and soon tries to find all she can about she even goes to Seattle to see him. And once she gets off the plane, Sam who was in the airport to see someone off, sees her and can't keep his eyes off her and tries to follow her but couldn't catch her. Jonah who has been going through the mail that his father has gotten ever since he was on the radio, sees the letter Annie wrote on a whim but didn't send it but her friend did. He tells his father this could be it. But Sam doesn't think he could have a relationship with someone who lives so far away. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have great chemistry together, and they both do what they're good at Tom Hanks portraying the everyman, and Meg Ryan being cute and innocent. "Sleepless In Seattle" is a movie that offers a multitude of rewards if you are simply willing to reach out nd open yourself up to it. All you have to do is let it in. Do it, and you'll be glad you did, guaranteed. It's the magic of the movies. |

Well, it is a departure from the grist mill of everyday life we endure day in and day out. Some "Feel Good" movies are better than others . . . too much sugar coating makes one lethargic. "Sleepless" is just right. Odd that in the 2 or 3 bios I have seen on Tom Hanks, Sleepless In Seatle is never mention in his filmography. Mr Hanks probably thinks it beneath "Private Ryan" or others he has garnered awards for. It is not!! Sleepless is cast perfectly, from supporting slots filled so well by Ms O'Donnell, Rob Reiner and David Hyde Pierce . . . and the two leads with fantastic chemistry, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Absent foul language and sexual exploits
You know the story line . . . who does not? This script has more memorized one liners used around our house than most any other film we enjoy. The opening scenes are so sad . . . the father and son at the grave of their wife and mother, and the friends and family trying to help . . . caring so much about this good man and his son. One immediatly starts thinking that the entire movie is doomed to walk this dark and emotional path. But NO! A change of venue opens up a refreshing new tact in the story, a chance call in encounter with a radio female "Frasier Crane" who's listening audience includes Annie Reed (Meg Ryan) from Baltimore, who is engaged to Walter (Bill Pullman) who is allergic to everything and a very VERY nice man. Actually, Bill Pullman's characture is one of the things this film does perfectly! Instead of this supporting role being portrayed as a guy we don't like, a thug or an idiot, Walter is really a great guy! Anyway, things are set in motion from this point on, and the film is simply "magic" as the storyline points out! Absent profanity and sexual content . . . . well, save be for a scene or 2 like this:
::::: Sam baldwin: I'll tell you what I'm doing this weekend, I'm getting laid. It's the 1990's and nobody's getting laid. I'm the only man in America who's getting laid this weekend and I haven't been laid that much. Six girls in college, maybe seven.
[sees Jonah standing in the doorway]
Sam Baldwin: How long have you been standing there?
Jonah Baldwin: Forever.
Sam Baldwin: What did you just hear me say?
Jonah Baldwin: Six girls in college, maybe seven.
Sam Baldwin: Seven... EIGHT! Mary Kelly.
Jonah Baldwin: [holds Annie's letter] This is the one I like!
This film does what it was designed to do, that is to be familiar and yet rich with surprises. Buy it and watch it often. You will like the way you feel after! |
