| I was pleasantly surprised when the generator arrived. It arrived ahead of schedule and started on the second pull once I put gas and oil in it. I tested it by running two circular saws at once to see how it would handle the load - no problem. It is so quite that I could talk to my neighbor with out shouting while idling the only reason we raised our voices was because of the saws. Great product i reccommend it to any one who needs a generator for camping, RV or emergencies. |

I have been looking for a portable generator for home and my class A motorhome. The RV has a self-contained generator, but being in remote Alaska, I wanted a backup incase my RV batteries failed. I alson wanted a portable generator to take to remote sites when we would need good reliable AC power. With the inverter type AC output, I know that I'm getting clean power for my computer chip type equipment. After adding oil to the crankcase, and fuel to the gas tank, it started with one crank. Power production was as advertised. With the "smart switch" on the generator would idle when no output was needed and as load was added, it would power up quickly. Without the "smart switch" on the generator would operate at full power which would allow it to take on heavier startup loads. ie.. motors. WORKS GREAT!!!

This is one of the ultra quiet generators suitable for outdoor uses such as camping where generator noise is a consideration. It is a little bigger than I expected but still relatively light and portable. I use it for my 5th wheel trailer since most of my camping is in remote locations. It's a little noisier than I expected but I'm sure based on the db rating it's as quiet as any of its competition.
I was pleased to find that it will power my air conditioner without any overload problems at all. This was at 10,000 feet elevation where generator performance is seriously degraded due to the thin air. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that it will power the microwave oven flawlessly. Honda invertor generators do not seem to get along with microwave ovens at all for reasons I don't understand.
Some of you may be interested in exactly what an invertor generator is. Standard generators are direct drive AC generators. That means they must maintain a constant engine speed to maintain 60 cycle output power. The higher engine speed results in a much higher noise level. An invertor generator is a DC (direct current) generator that uses an invertor to convert the DC generator output to the 60 cycle AC required by electric appliances. Therefore faster engine speeds are only required for high current output levels. When the generator is lightly loaded such as when only lights are being used, the engine idles quietly even though power is available. When a larger current load is applied, the engine speeds up to provide the additional power required.
As with other invertor generators I have seen, this one has two modes, standard and economy. Standard mode is similar to the operating mode of an ordinary AC generator, with the engine speed relatively high and constant. Economy mode is as described above, raising the engine speed only to accommodate changes in load. It is recommended that standard mode be used when large and variable loads are regularly placed on the unit. I've found tht economy mode seems to work well for these conditions also, even with large loads like the air conditioner being turned on and off.
The negative about this generator is lack of information available on it. The seller has not provided any guidance on where parts, service, and repair manuals can be obtained. I believe this is the manufacturer's website and some information might be obtained from them: http://www.asia-hardware.com/xg/ecpzs1.htm . The manual that comes with the unit is fairly good as far as operational items but gives no information about service or parts.
Overall I'm pleased with the unit and believe it to be a very good value for the money. The low oil cutout works properly and the unit starts reliably although it takes a fair amount of tugging when cold. I would recommend this unit based on price and the fact that they seem to have solved some of the output problems common to Honda generators. |
