This product shows, in real-time, the Amperage, the Voltage, and the Wattage for the current load. It also retains a timer and cumulative energy use in kilowatt hours (kWh).
Mine only gripe is that it's Amperage limited at ~15A, so it won't work for some high-current devices, such as a microwave. For most uses, though, it's very easy to determine over a period of time how much a device costs to operate by multplying the rate per kWh (e.g. 11ยข/kWh where I live) by the number of kWh used over the given timeframe.
It also has a timer feature (enables pre-timed operation of the socket during configurable timespan). |

| I bought this because I was curious to see what the vampire draw of my stereo was. I was very surprised to see that it was at 19 watts when everything was turned off. I really like that there is a switch on the unit that will cut power to everything plugged in. I now use this switch to completely turn off my stereo when I am not using it. I also like that it will track how much energy has been consumed and the number of days/hours elapsed since it was reset. I like that this has a timer that can be set to turn it on/off on a weekly schedule. I use this as a timer when I go out of town and can set the lights to go on and off at different times of day every day. I did not find it difficult to program as others mentioned. |

The "safety" feature trips on practically everything with moving parts making it useless for fridges, heaters, washing machines and even some computers!
I'm unconvinced that my fridge draws 35A when the compressor starts but even if it did for a few milliseconds it couldn't be too hard to have some delay in the cutoff.
Poor implementation of a potentially useful product.

| Device does what it says but you still have to do some interpretation of readings. Monitors and records Amps, Kw, Voltage plus has timer that can turn devices on and off. Has protection circuit that will turn off device if power spike goes too high (over 15 Amp). The protection circuit triggered three different times for suspicious reasons. Once while monitoring my refridgerator it tripped in the middle of the night and twice while on an entertainment center as the flat screen TV was turned on. None of those times should have triggered the shutdown circuit at 20amp and 18 amp respectively. The protection circuit is a good thing if accurate but it does not turn power on to the device after tripping which is a bad thing for a refridgerator. It will give you a chance to monitor power at different devices to accumulate usage information. The timer will be handy if you need an automatic/timed switch. |

The Kill A Watt P4480 meter is a useful device to get wattage and amp readings of appliances that draw low to moderate power. The maximum current that it can handle is 15 amps, which means my toaster always shuts it off and my washing machine sometimes does. But it's fine for measuring power used by my refrigerator, computer, lamps, etc. The meter has a modest programming ablity: it can be set up to record the same or different blocks of time per day over a period of several days and give readouts of the total power consumed during these increments. There does not appear to be a way to view the power used per increment, only the total power used. I would appreciate the ability to click through the program day by day and see how much power was used on each day per increment.
In summary this is a meter which can measure only a limited amp range and which has a limited programmable ability. But what it can do it does well. |
